IMANI’s Kofi Bentil Faces Public Backlash After Controversial Comment on Javits Frimpong Killing
According to a report by TV3 Ghana on Saturday October 31, 2026, Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has faced strong criticism from the public over his remarks on the murder of a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy.
Speaking on the recent happenings at Narawa Mines, Mr. Bentil questioned the government’s selective concern. He said a statement was issued for a Ghanaian killed abroad, yet three Ghanaians killed in Ghana have not received the same level of attention. In his words, someone leaves the country to look for opportunities elsewhere, and the government issues a statement, but he asked, “What about Ghanaians working here?”
The comment did not sit well with many social media users. Within minutes of the post, the comment section was filled with reactions. Many described his statement as unfortunate and insensitive. Others said it was “below the belt,” especially at a time when a family is mourning the loss of a child.
Some commenters also reminded Mr. Bentil of an earlier event. They noted that a funeral was held in Ghana for the late George Floyd during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo. They asked why he is now complaining about a statement for a Ghanaian citizen. One user described the comment as hypocritical.
Others argued that governments often speak up when their citizens die abroad because of diplomatic duty. A few users also pointed out that leaders from both sides of the political divide are quick to comment on international matters rather than local ones.
Meanwhile, a few social media users defended Mr. Bentil. They agreed that the government must pay more attention to the safety of Ghanaians at home, including those working in the mining sector.
At the time of this report, Mr. Bentil had not responded to the criticism. The debate continues online as Ghanaians call for justice for the young boy and better protection for all citizens, both at home and abroad.
