CS Davis Chirchir Sets Opening Date for Rironi-Naivasha Dual Carriageway
The national infrastructure policy strategy desks, transport logistics secretariats, and KeNHA highway monitoring command centers across the capital have been thrown into an absolute state of frenzy after Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir confirmed the completion timeline for the newly expanded four-lane Rironi-Naivasha section of the multibillion-shilling Rironi-Mau Summit highway.
The high-voltage dualling update brings long-awaited relief to thousands of long-distance transport operators, commercial haulers, and weekend travelers heading to Nakuru and Western Kenya who have endured severe traffic gridlocks and fatal accident bottlenecks along the steep Escarpment and Mai Mahiu routes.
Under the accelerated construction schedule executed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), the four-lane stretch between Rironi and Naivasha has reached operational readiness ahead of the broader corridor’s scheduled June 2027 rollout.
Key Pillars of the Rironi-Naivasha Highway Opening
Four-Lane Carriageway Expansion: The 139 km stretch has been dualled from two lanes into a high-capacity four-lane highway, eliminating major traffic choke points along the escarpment and heavy truck slowdowns.
Modern Interchanges & Safety Features: The project incorporates major grade-separated interchanges at key urban junctions, enhanced street lighting powered by solar micro-grids, and dedicated climbing lanes for freight trucks.
Phase-Two Rollout Toward Mau Summit: With the Rironi-Naivasha segment handed over, construction teams from Shandong Hi-Speed are ramping up heavy earthworks and expansion on the remaining Gilgil-Nakuru-Mau Summit stretch.
Northern Corridor Transit Acceleration: The dualled corridor directly reduces transit times between Nairobi, Naivasha’s Inland Container Depot (ICD), Nakuru, and landlinked neighbors across the East African Community.
Underscoring the government’s commitment to modernizing the country’s main trade and passenger arteries, Roads Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir noted:
“By expanding this section from Rironi to Naivasha into a dual carriageway, we are providing immediate relief to motorists, enhancing safety on a historically dangerous stretch, and ensuring the smooth movement of transit freight across the Northern Corridor.” — Davis Chirchir, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport
The early opening of the Rironi-Naivasha stretch comes as the government secures supplementary grant funding to initiate preliminary engineering works for the subsequent Mau Summit-Malaba corridor expansion.
These major infrastructure dispatches have instantly ignited a massive firestorm across national transport associations, commercial haulage firms, and real estate developers along the Great Rift Valley corridor.
As vehicles transition to the upgraded dual carriageway, unlocking the Rironi-Naivasha stretch marks a monumental victory for national logistics.
