Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Jefferson Asare Danquah, has raised concerns about the welfare of nurses.Bullet TV graphic (29 October 2026); TMG Nurses Forum.
Speaking at the TMG Nurses Forum on 29 October 2026, he said nurses care for others but are forced to pay their own medical bills when they fall sick.
“We (nurses) care for others but pay our own medical bills when we’re sick,” he stated.
The comment highlights ongoing challenges faced by nurses regarding their conditions of service and access to healthcare. Many health workers have long complained about the lack of adequate medical support for themselves and their families despite working under demanding conditions.
Danquah’s statement comes at a time when the GRNMA continues to engage the government on issues affecting nurses, including remuneration, allowances and general welfare.
Nurses play a critical role in Ghana’s healthcare system, often working long hours and under pressure, especially in public hospitals. The call for better support reflects growing frustration within the profession.
The GRNMA has previously raised concerns about delayed agreements and unfulfilled promises on conditions of service. Leaders of the association have stressed the need for improved welfare packages to motivate health workers and retain them in the public sector.
Health authorities are expected to respond to the concerns raised by nurses as discussions on improving conditions of service continue.
