TOR’s Turnaround Sparks Accountability Questions as Kwame Jantuah Challenges Kombat and Board

TOR’s Turnaround Sparks Accountability Questions as Kwame Jantuah Challenges Kombat and Board

Kwame Jantuah Esq., a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has called on Edmond Kombat and the board of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to explain the measures that have transformed the state-owned refinery into a profitable enterprise.

Jantuah’s comments have brought renewed attention to the refinery’s financial performance and the strategies adopted by its leadership to restore its operational strength after years of financial difficulties.

According to him, the reported improvement in TOR’s fortunes deserves a detailed explanation to help Ghanaians understand the decisions, policies and management practices responsible for the turnaround.

He believes that the refinery’s leadership must be prepared to account for the progress made and demonstrate how the institution has managed to overcome the challenges that previously threatened its sustainability.

Edmond Kombat and the TOR board must explain how they turned the refinery into a profitable enterprise, Jantuah stated, stressing the importance of transparency in managing a strategic state-owned institution.

The call comes amid growing public interest in the refinery’s ability to return to profitability after years of operational setbacks, mounting financial obligations and concerns about its contribution to Ghana’s petroleum sector.

TOR remains an important national asset, with the potential to support domestic fuel production, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and contribute to the country’s broader industrial development.

However, Jantuah’s remarks suggest that celebrating improved performance should go hand in hand with examining the policies and management decisions that made such progress possible.

A comprehensive explanation from the board could provide insight into the refinery’s operational strategy, financial management, maintenance arrangements and efforts to improve efficiency.

It could also help establish whether the reported gains are sustainable and what measures are being implemented to prevent the company from returning to the difficulties it experienced in previous years.

For taxpayers and industry stakeholders, the issue extends beyond profitability to questions about accountability, effective leadership and the responsible management of public resources.

The refinery’s management is therefore expected to demonstrate how its strategies have strengthened the institution and positioned it for long-term growth.

While Jantuah’s demand highlights the need for answers, the central question remains whether TOR can sustain its improved performance and establish itself as a reliable pillar of Ghana’s energy industry.

Ultimately, the refinery’s success will be measured not only by its ability to generate profits but also by its capacity to maintain operational stability and deliver lasting value to the Ghanaian economy.
