Ruto Bought Mudavadi’s ANC Party for KSh20 Million, Gachagua Alleges

Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that President William Ruto acquired Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s former Amani National Congress party for KSh20 million, alleging that he personally negotiated the deal on behalf of the Head of State.

Gachagua made the explosive claims on Friday, October 30, 2026, during the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, where he criticised Mudavadi over his remarks concerning Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the formation of political parties.

According to the former Deputy President, he was directly involved in negotiations between Mudavadi and Ruto before the ANC party was dissolved and merged with the ruling United Democratic Alliance.

Gachagua questioned Mudavadi’s authority to criticise Sifuna over his political ambitions, arguing that the Prime Cabinet Secretary had surrendered his own party before questioning another leader’s ability to establish a political outfit.

He further alleged that Mudavadi had been pressured to abandon ANC, claiming that the transaction was concluded for KSh20 million.

The claims, however, remain allegations made by Gachagua, and no independent evidence confirming the alleged payment was presented in the report.

Beyond the alleged ANC transaction, Gachagua challenged Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to account for their political agreement with Ruto ahead of the 2022 General Election.

He claimed that the agreement involved specific leadership positions and development commitments intended to benefit Western Kenya in exchange for political support for Ruto’s presidential bid.

According to Gachagua, the arrangement included Mudavadi’s appointment as Prime Cabinet Secretary, Wetang’ula’s elevation to Speaker of the National Assembly and a commitment to construct 1,000 kilometres of new tarmac roads in the region.

The former Deputy President challenged the two leaders to identify the roads allegedly promised under the agreement, questioning whether residents had received the infrastructure commitments.

He urged Western Kenya residents to demand accountability from their leaders instead of automatically supporting the ruling administration.

Gachagua’s remarks come amid intensifying political realignments as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His criticism also appeared designed to strengthen Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Movement as an alternative political platform, particularly among voters in Western Kenya.

Meanwhile, UDA and ANC formally merged in January 2025, with ANC subsequently dissolved through the party’s official processes.

Mudavadi and Ruto have publicly presented the merger as a political consolidation, while Gachagua’s latest allegations have introduced fresh controversy surrounding the negotiations.

Neither the alleged KSh20 million payment nor the circumstances Gachagua described should be treated as established fact without further verification.

The claims are likely to fuel debate over political party mergers, accountability and the commitments made to regions during Kenya’s coalition-building negotiations.
