Kaizer Chiefs Star Back From Two Career-Threatening Knee Surgeries Ready To Destroy Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley has expressed his excitement about returning to action at a crucial stage of the season, with the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates providing an opportunity for him to make another important statement.

The 24-year-old centre-back recently ended an incredibly difficult 18-month spell on the sidelines after recovering from a serious knee injury that required surgery and an extensive rehabilitation process.

Dortley made his long-awaited return to the starting line-up during Chiefs’ impressive 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 27 October. His return was particularly encouraging, as he helped Fernando Da Cruz’s team secure a clean sheet while also demonstrating the defensive qualities that made him an important player before his injury setback.

Speaking about his comeback, Dortley admitted that being away from football for such an extended period was not easy. However, he expressed his happiness at finally getting another opportunity to represent the Amakhosi badge.

“You know, it’s been difficult being off the field for so long. But it feels very, very good being back, being able to help the team, being able to represent the badge again,” Dortley said.

The defender also highlighted how special it was to return just before the Soweto Derby, admitting that he enjoys playing in big matches and understands the importance of the rivalry between Chiefs and Pirates.

He described the fixture as one of the biggest encounters in African football, making his return even more meaningful.

Dortley believes the victory over TS Galaxy has also provided the squad with a timely confidence boost ahead of Saturday’s showdown against their fierce rivals.

“The mood is good after the win. We needed this win before the derby, and the mood is good. It’s just for us to go out there, implement what the coach wants us to do, and just to play to the best of our abilities,” he added.

His return will undoubtedly provide Da Cruz with another valuable defensive option as Chiefs prepare to face a dangerous Pirates side.

The Buccaneers have enjoyed an impressive start to their Betway Premiership campaign, making Saturday’s encounter an important test for the Glamour Boys.

With Dortley back in contention, Chiefs will hope his defensive strength, composure and ability to build attacks from the back can make a difference.

The Soweto Derby is scheduled for Saturday, 31 October, at FNB Stadium, with kick-off set for 15:30.
