Government to fund pharmaceutical hub for local vaccine production
The government is expected to announce a dedicated budgetary allocation to support Ghana’s Pharmaceutical Hub initiative, with funding expected to take effect next year.
The Presidential Coordinator for the Ghana Pharmaceutical Hub, a Presidential National Legacy Initiative, Dr. Bernice Makafui Brempong, disclosed this while speaking at the 2026 General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists in Accra.
She said the President remains committed to supporting the development of the Pharmaceutical Hub, adding that the Finance Minister is expected to announce the budgetary allocation in the coming weeks to advance the initiative.
The development is expected to strengthen Ghana’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, promote local production of medicines and reduce the country’s dependence on imported pharmaceutical products.
Meanwhile, the President of the Ghana Association of Industries and Vice President of the National Development Planning Commission, Dr. Kofi Nsiah-Poku, has called for stronger collaboration between local pharmaceutical manufacturers and hospitals to promote the patronage of Ghana-made medicines.
He urged industry players to advocate for policies that support local pharmaceutical manufacturers and create an enabling environment for the growth of the sector.
Dr. Nsiah-Poku also raised concerns about the impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, on medicine security and local pharmaceutical production.
He warned that pollution of water bodies through illegal mining poses a serious threat to the availability of safe and clean water, an essential resource for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
He stressed that the pharmaceutical industry depends on safe water and a healthy environment to maintain production standards and guarantee the safety and quality of medicines.
