Gachagua Reveals His Next Move If He Misses the Opposition Flag Bearer Ticket

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made another major declaration about his political future, revealing the position he would be willing to take if he fails to secure the opposition’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the Linda Mwananchi Party headquarters launch in Lavington, Nairobi, on Friday, October 30, Gachagua indicated that he was ready to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna if opposition leaders settled on him as their preferred presidential candidate.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said he would be willing to become Sifuna’s campaign director if he was not favoured to carry the opposition’s presidential flag.

“If I’m not favoured to be the opposition’s presidential candidate, I, Riggy G, will become Sifuna’s campaign director,” Gachagua declared.

His remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are holding discussions on how to agree on a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.

The Friday event brought together several prominent opposition figures, including Sifuna, Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

Sifuna’s political ambitions have gained attention following his fallout with ODM, with the Linda Mwananchi movement settling on him as its preferred presidential candidate in September.

The launch also marked the unveiling of the movement’s new headquarters, which will serve as its national coordination centre and presidential campaign command centre.

Sifuna has also announced Natembeya as the leader of his presidential campaign, with former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo named as his deputy.

Gachagua’s latest declaration is likely to draw attention as opposition leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of the next General Election.

His willingness to take a campaign role under Sifuna also raises questions about how the opposition will eventually settle on its presidential candidate.

Will the opposition leaders agree on one candidate before the 2027 elections?
