DERBY DRAMA: Pirates Captain Drops Chiefs Bombshell
Sibisi Sends Strong Warning to Chiefs: Pirates Refuse to Be Bullied in Soweto Derby
Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has made it clear that the Buccaneers will not allow Kaizer Chiefs to intimidate them physically when the two Soweto giants renew their rivalry in Saturday’s highly anticipated Betway Premiership derby at FNB Stadium.
With excitement building ahead of one of South African football’s biggest fixtures, the physical approach Chiefs could adopt has become one of the major talking points.
Pirates were previously caught off guard by the intensity of their opponents during their previous meetings, with Sibisi acknowledging that certain challenges went beyond what his team considered acceptable.
However, the experienced defender insists that his teammates are determined to remain focused on their football rather than become distracted by the physical battles.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s encounter, Sibisi explained that physicality is not necessarily a weakness for Pirates, provided the contest remains fair.
“For us, physicality is not a problem, if it’s fair. Sometimes it’s not, and why should we be judged on that as a club?” Sibisi said.
The Pirates skipper further acknowledged that his team’s preference is to play attractive, attacking football rather than become involved in unnecessary physical confrontations.
He admitted that people have questioned the Buccaneers’ ability to cope when opponents make matches particularly physical, but stressed that the team has been working to improve in that department.
“As a club, we just want to play football in the best manner possible, and I know people say we tend to struggle when the match gets physical, but it’s not our type of game.
“We’ve been trying to grow in that aspect as a team, and so we’ll see how it goes on Saturday,” he added.
Meanwhile, Pirates head into the derby with considerable confidence following their impressive recent performances under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
The Buccaneers strengthened their preparations with a convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup, while Chiefs also recorded a 3-0 win against TS Galaxy.
Despite their contrasting league performances, the Soweto Derby remains a fixture where form and statistics can quickly become irrelevant.
Sibisi understands the importance of delivering a positive result, particularly with thousands of passionate supporters expected to fill FNB Stadium.
For Pirates, victory would not only secure bragging rights but also strengthen their momentum in the Betway Premiership title race.
Chiefs, meanwhile, will be eager to upset their bitter rivals and demonstrate that they can compete against the defending champions.
With both teams preparing for an intense encounter, Sibisi’s message is clear: Pirates are ready for the challenge and will not abandon their footballing identity simply because their opponents choose a physical approach.
Saturday’s showdown promises another fiercely contested chapter in the historic Soweto Derby rivalry.
