Pirates Join Chiefs as PSL Confirms Fixture Change Amid CAF Commitments

Orlando Pirates have joined Kaizer Chiefs in having their next Betway Premiership fixture rescheduled as a result of their commitments in CAF inter-club competitions.

The latest adjustment comes as South African clubs continue to balance domestic football with demanding continental schedules, forcing the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to make changes to the league programme.

Pirates are preparing for an important CAF Champions League campaign after being drawn against Namibian side African Stars in the second preliminary round. CAF has confirmed that the first legs of the second preliminary round will be played between October 16 and 18, with the return legs scheduled for October 23 to 25.

The Buccaneers were originally scheduled to face TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership on October 18. However, that date falls directly within the window for the first leg of their CAF Champions League tie, making a fixture adjustment necessary.

The PSL’s latest fixture information now lists Orlando Pirates against TS Galaxy for October 18, but reports indicate that the match is among the fixtures being affected by the club’s continental commitments.

Kaizer Chiefs have also experienced a similar change to their schedule because of their participation in the CAF Confederation Cup. Amakhosi enter the competition at the second preliminary-round stage after receiving a bye from the opening round.

Chiefs are scheduled to face Zambia’s Red Arrows in the Confederation Cup, while their Betway Premiership campaign continues around their continental commitments. The club’s next confirmed league fixture is against Stellenbosch FC on October 17 at FNB Stadium.

For Pirates, the fixture congestion comes during a particularly busy period. The defending Betway Premiership champions are also preparing for the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns on October 10 before turning their attention back to continental football.

The scheduling changes highlight the challenge facing South African clubs competing on multiple fronts. With CAF matches taking place across several weekends, domestic fixtures sometimes have to be moved to ensure teams have adequate preparation and recovery time.

Pirates will therefore have to manage their squad carefully as they pursue success in the league, the MTN8 and the CAF Champions League, while Chiefs face a similarly demanding period with domestic and continental football on their agenda.

The PSL is expected to confirm the revised date for the affected Pirates league fixture as the continental schedule becomes clearer.
