This is not how you fight corruption – Dr Zaato tells Mahama

Senior Fellow at Africa Policy Lens and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Zaato has praised Joy News and the parliamentary Minority for their roles in scrutinising the South Africa evacuation exercise, while accusing the government and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of failing to meet the accountability standards they previously demanded from others.

He said the controversy had exposed contrasting approaches to public accountability.

Zaato described Joy News as an important player for independently examining the claims rather than relying solely on explanations from politicians.

“Joy News, as an independent arbiter, what they have done, they are heroes. They’ve been able to tell us that they will not just take the word of politicians, either Minority or Majority, like that. No, they will do an independent search,” he said.

He also praised the Minority, particularly the Deputy Ranking Member on Foreign Affairs, for continuing to raise questions about the evacuation exercise.

Zaato said the Minority had persisted despite what he described as pressure from the government’s communications machinery and the public release of personal information belonging to the official involved.

“He didn’t waver. He stayed steadfast, he stayed strong, he worked hard. This country owes him and the Minority a ton of gratitude,” he said.

However, Zaato identified the government and the Foreign Affairs Minister as the losers in the controversy, arguing that they had failed to demonstrate the same commitment to independent investigations they had advocated while in opposition.

He said the current administration had an opportunity to address the allegations through an independent inquiry but had not taken the step he considered necessary.

“They have so far refused to rise up to the moral high standards that they demanded when they were in opposition. They have so far refused to take their own medicine,” he said.

Zaato argued that the government’s response could undermine its stated commitment to fighting corruption if the concerns remained unresolved.

“This is not how you fight corruption if you are serious. This is not how you fight corruption when given a low-hanging ball,” he said.

He concluded that the controversy had become a test of the government’s willingness to subject its own actions to the standards of accountability it had previously demanded.
