Moroka Swallows legend Steve Sekano reveals why he left the steering committee

Moroka Swallows legend Steve Sekano has spoken out for the first time about why he walked away from the club’s steering committee. He says the group lost focus and started chasing unrealistic goals that no longer matched what they had first agreed on.

The steering committee was set up about two years ago under the ā€œBring Back The Birdsā€ banner. Supporters wanted to rally fans, look for local sponsorship and find investors who could help return the historic Soweto club to professional football. Swallows had struggled for years with money problems before their top-flight status was sold in 2024.

Sekano told KickOff that nothing was coming together. ā€œThe agreement was to get the team back, but now they’ve changed their tune. They want to control everything,ā€ he said. He added that some members began demanding shares in the club even though the committee only had R10 000 in its pockets. ā€œI told them you can’t get shares with R10 000,ā€ he explained.

The former player said it does not make sense for a supporters’ group to expect a say in how a team is run when someone else is putting in the money. ā€œIf I buy a team with my own money, it means I’m in charge. As a supporter, your job is to support the team, not to control the management,ā€ he said. He pointed out that a similar approach failed at Bloemfontein Celtic and argued it is unlikely to work in South Africa, where club owners usually fund teams from their own pockets.

Sekano’s exit comes after businessman and former broadcaster Walter Mokoena announced the relaunch of the club as Moroka Swallows SC. The steering committee said they were not consulted and later issued a statement distancing themselves from the new project. Mokoena has invited club legends, including Sekano, Joel ā€œAceā€ Mnini and Andries Mpondo, to be involved in his plans. The new side has already started competing again in the regional leagues.

Sekano’s comments highlight the growing tension between long-time supporters who worked to revive the club and the new ownership structure. While many fans simply want to see the Dube Birds back on the field, questions remain about how supporters will fit into the future of the reborn club.
