Gachagua Finally Explains Why He Has No Grudge Against Sifuna Over His Impeachment

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained why he holds no grudge against Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over his participation in the 2024 impeachment process, despite the political differences that once separated them.

Speaking during an interview with KTN on Wednesday, Gachagua described his impeachment as a development that ultimately worked in favour of the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua was removed from office on October 17, 2024, after the Senate upheld five of the 11 charges brought against him. At the time, Sifuna was serving as secretary general of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which belonged to the opposition.

According to Gachagua, Sifuna acted in the interests of his party rather than out of personal hostility. He said he understood the senator’s explanation when they discussed the matter during a visit to his Wamunyoro home on October 20.

“The good young man explained to me, and I agreed with his reasoning. They were in ODM, our opponents with William Ruto,” Gachagua said.

He added that Sifuna had argued that removing him from office would weaken President William Ruto’s political support in the Mount Kenya region.

Gachagua believes the impeachment contributed to the deterioration of Ruto’s relationship with the region, which had played a significant role in securing his victory in the 2022 presidential election.

He also dismissed the suggestion that Sifuna had betrayed him, explaining that the two were not political allies when the senator participated in the process.

“Sifuna and I were not in the same camp; he did not vote for me, so how does he betray me?” Gachagua posed.

Instead, the former Deputy President identified his former Kenya Kwanza allies as the people he considered responsible for betraying their political agreement.

Gachagua and Sifuna are now part of the United Opposition, which is seeking to agree on a single presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027. Sifuna has emerged as a potential contender for the coalition’s presidential ticket.

Gachagua also said his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) was open to former Kenya Kwanza allies seeking to change political sides, provided they formally joined the party.

His remarks suggest that, despite their past political differences, he considers their current partnership more important than revisiting the impeachment dispute.
