Gachagua Cautions Raila Jr and Winnie Odinga Against Politically Associating With Ruto
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a warning to Raila Odinga Junior and Winnie Odinga over their political association with President William Ruto as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua expressed his views on the political direction taken by the two children of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, suggesting that their relationship with the current administration could influence their chances of winning elective seats in Nairobi.
According to Gachagua, Nairobi residents are increasingly leaning towards opposition politics, making it difficult for candidates perceived to be working closely with the government to secure victory at the ballot.
The former Deputy President’s remarks come as Raila Junior is linked to plans to contest the Kibra parliamentary seat, while Winnie has expressed interest in vying for the Nairobi senatorial position.
Gachagua argued that the two aspirants need to carefully consider their political alliances before making decisions that could affect their campaigns. He maintained that the political mood in Nairobi could favour leaders who position themselves as critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The comments have added another dimension to the debate surrounding the future of the Odinga family’s political influence following Raila’s death in October 2025.
While Raila Junior has shown support for Ruto’s re-election bid, Winnie has been associated with political developments involving opposition figures and the Linda Mwananchi movement.
The differences have attracted attention at a time when ODM is navigating internal disagreements over its cooperation with the government and its future political strategy.
Gachagua’s warning also highlights the growing competition among political leaders seeking to consolidate support in Nairobi ahead of the next elections.
However, whether the Odinga siblings will follow his advice remains to be seen. Their eventual political decisions, party nominations and ability to connect with voters will play a significant role in determining their electoral prospects.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, the political choices made by prominent families and emerging opposition leaders are expected to shape the country’s evolving political landscape.
