Fernando Da Cruz Shares Insight Into His Regular Meetings With Kaizer Motaung Jr at Chiefs
Da Cruz Opens Up About Regular Meetings With Kaizer Motaung Jr as Chiefs Back Their Coach
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 29 OCTOBER 2026
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has revealed that he holds regular meetings with Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr to assess the team’s progress, offering insight into the discussions behind the club’s decision to publicly back him following their CAF Confederation Cup disappointment.
The French tactician expressed his gratitude to the Chiefs leadership after the club reaffirmed its confidence in him and his technical team despite their elimination from continental competition.
Da Cruz explained that the support was not simply a reaction to recent results but formed part of an ongoing process in which the club evaluates its performances, identifies weaknesses and works towards achieving its long-term objectives.
According to the coach, he meets Motaung Jr every three weeks to discuss the team’s development and the broader direction of the club.
“First thing I would like to thank the club for the statement, I would like to thank the Sporting Director and the whole board for the statement they made,” Da Cruz said.
He added that the meetings allow both parties to examine the team’s performances regardless of whether Chiefs win, draw or lose.
The coach believes this approach creates stability and allows the technical team to concentrate on improving the squad instead of becoming distracted by external pressure.
Da Cruz Explains Chiefs’ Vote of Confidence
Chiefs’ decision to stand behind Da Cruz came after a difficult period that included their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup at the hands of Zambian side Red Arrows.
The setback raised questions among supporters about the team’s progress under the Frenchman, particularly given the club’s expectations of competing for major honours.
However, Da Cruz insisted that the club’s assessment must extend beyond individual results and consider the work being done behind the scenes.
“The confidence he’s given us is very important for the daily work that we do, where even if we win, draw or lose, we need to analyse the situation very well,” he explained.
He also rejected the suggestion that a victory automatically makes him a better coach than he was following a defeat.
“In our meeting we always speak to improve the team every day, and today I’m not a better coach than last week just before we were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup,” Da Cruz said.
