Bayern Munich Makes a Post After Ruto Confirmed January Match Against Ajax Will Be Played in Nairobi
German giants Bayern Munich have officially confirmed they will travel to Kenya on January 5, 2027, to play Ajax Amsterdam in a ceremonial match that will open the new Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City.
The club made the announcement on its official Facebook page, describing the fixture as a special match to kick off the new year.
The confirmation came shortly after President William Ruto revealed that the two storied European clubs would grace Kenyan soil for the historic occasion.
The 60,000-seat stadium, named in honour of Raila Odinga, has been under construction, with many Kenyans eager to see how it looks inside.
Talanta Sports City is considered a landmark investment in the country’s sporting infrastructure, and the friendly is meant to give the venue a fitting introduction on the global stage.
Ajax have also confirmed their participation, with the Dutch club expressing pride on social media over taking part in the marquee fixture. The match is set to be a milestone for East African sports as Kenya prepares to co-host the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Bayern are among the most decorated clubs in world football, having lifted the UEFA Champions League several times and dominated the Bundesliga for decades. Ajax, for their part, are famed for producing some of Europe’s finest talent, and the prospect of watching both sides in Nairobi has sent local fans into a frenzy.
The January 5 date falls within the winter break for both clubs, which makes it easier for players and staff to make the trip.
Not everyone is celebrating, however. X influencer Mwabili has petitioned Bayern to cancel the January match, although the club has not responded to the appeal.
For many supporters who have long dreamed of watching top-tier European football on home soil, the clash is set to be a moment they will remember for years.
