AY Speaks Out Amid Calls for His Cancellation

Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has addressed the criticism he received following his absence from a scheduled performance at AY Live Cardiff.

The comedian was expected to perform at the event on Sunday but did not appear, leaving some attendees disappointed. Following the incident, several social media users criticised him and called for his cancellation.

AY subsequently apologised to those who attended the show, acknowledging that their time, money and support deserved to be respected. However, the apology has not stopped the criticism, prompting him to share a more detailed explanation of what happened.

In a lengthy statement on his Instagram page, the comedian admitted that the situation had been painful, particularly because he felt that one incident was overshadowing more than two decades of work and commitment to his fans.

He disclosed that some respected figures in the entertainment industry had advised him to remain silent until the controversy subsided. However, he explained that those who paid to attend the event deserved to hear his side of the story.

AY also spoke about the challenges he had experienced while performing during the tour. According to him, he had continued working despite payment-related difficulties and had sometimes used his personal funds to cover expenses for colleagues.

He explained that after several such experiences and a five-hour drive from Sheffield to Cardiff, he reached his limit. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the fans who waited for him were not responsible for the difficulties he encountered.

The comedian reiterated his apology to those who were disappointed by his absence and urged the public to consider his years of dedication alongside the incident.

He also appealed to those who had shared the criticism to give his explanation the same attention, adding that he intended to learn from the experience rather than abandon the career he had built.
