According to Isokrari, Burna Boy’s requests for a substantial financial advance and a Porsche—both as non-recoverable gifts—were key factors in the decision.

Burna Boy, who first signed with Aristokrat in July 2011, parted ways with the label in May 2014 when his contract expired.

Speaking on “In The Garage” with Dolapo Amusat, Isokrari—also known as Peedi Picasso—explained that Aristokrat had planned to extend Burna Boy’s contract after securing an investment from 960 Music Group.

“We wanted to re-extend the contract in 2014 after our first investment deal with 960 Music Group,” Isokrari said. “Part of the reason for the 960 deal was so we could re-sign Burna and keep building together.”

However, Isokrari disclosed that Burna Boy’s demands at the time included a large financial advance and a luxury car, both to be given as outright gifts rather than traditional advances that could be recouped by the label.

“Burna had a different mentality at that point. He felt he had proven himself and wanted a big advance, a Porsche, and a list of other things. He also insisted these should be gifts, not recoupable,” Isokrari said. He noted that meeting these demands would have consumed most of the funds received from 960 Music Group, which were also intended to support other artists and expand the label’s operations.

“We knew how much we had from 960, and Burna’s demands would have meant giving him nearly all of it. While he deserved recognition, we didn’t want to build a one-artist label—we had bigger ambitions for Aristokrat,” he explained.

Isokrari also referenced similar challenges faced by other labels, noting that EME and Wizkid had a comparable dispute at the time. “They did what Burna wanted us to do, and it still didn’t work out for them,” he said.

Isokrari added that Burna Boy’s mother advised him to focus on Burna, emphasizing that as Burna grew, so would the label. Despite this, Aristokrat chose a different path.

This revelation comes amid ongoing legal disputes over Burna Boy’s early music catalogue. In June, a federal high court in Ikoyi dismissed a criminal case related to the alleged covert sale of Burna’s early works. The lawsuit centered around accusations of fraudulent conversion and breach of fiduciary duty against Aristokrat Records and Isokrari.

In February 2026, 960 Music Group, a minority shareholder, filed a case to overturn the multimillion-dollar sale of Burna Boy’s catalogue from Aristokrat Music to Spaceship Music, a company owned by Burna Boy and his mother-manager, Bose Ogulu. Court documents show that Aristokrat sold the intellectual property and master recordings from Burna’s early years to Spaceship Music in a transaction dated May/June 2024.
