2 Home Affairs Officials Helping Pakistan National To Get SA Passport Illegally Have Been Arrested
A suspected passport fraud scandal has landed two Home Affairs officials and a civilian in court, following allegations that they helped approximately 10 Pakistani nationals obtain South African passports using the credentials of legitimate South African citizens.
The accused, Larrick Tirick Steward, 23, Kamohelo Gordon Sebatane, 45, and Thabiso Meshark Seutlwadi, 44, appeared briefly before the Bothaville Magistrate’s Court in connection with the allegations.
The case has raised serious questions about the alleged misuse of South Africa’s identity documentation processes and the safeguards intended to protect the integrity of official travel documents.
According to the allegations, the trio was involved in facilitating the acquisition of South African passports for about 10 Pakistani nationals by allegedly using the credentials of genuine South African citizens.
If established in court, the allegations could expose serious vulnerabilities in the systems used to verify identities and issue passports. South African passports are important national documents that establish the identity and nationality of eligible citizens and enable international travel.
The alleged involvement of two Home Affairs officials has placed the spotlight on the responsibility of government employees to uphold the law and protect sensitive personal information entrusted to the department.
Officials working within the identity documentation system are expected to follow strict verification procedures and ensure that passports are issued only to eligible applicants. Any alleged breach of those responsibilities could undermine public confidence in the system.
The prosecution will need to present evidence demonstrating the alleged roles played by each accused and establishing how the passports were purportedly obtained.
The case comes amid broader efforts to combat identity fraud and protect South Africa official documentation systems from abuse.
Further developments in court are expected to clarify the evidence against the accused and the extent of the alleged scheme.
