Manqoba Mngqithi Breaks Silence on Reported Rift With Aziz Ki at Young Africans

Former Young Africans head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has addressed reports suggesting that his departure from the Tanzanian club was linked to a disagreement with star midfielder Aziz Ki. Speaking during an interview on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, the South African coach offered his perspective on the situation and explained why he believes the issue may have been more complicated than his selection decisions.

Mngqithi, who recently parted ways with Young Africans, was questioned about claims that his relationship with Aziz Ki had contributed to tensions within the club. The midfielder has been an important figure for the Tanzanian side, and speculation about a possible disagreement between the player and the coach has attracted attention following Mngqithi’s departure.

Responding to the reports, Mngqithi rejected the suggestion that the situation was simply about whether he selected Aziz Ki to play.

“I don’t think the issue revolves around me playing Aziz, and I would be lying if I said that; I don’t want to create the wrong impression,” Mngqithi said during the interview.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach explained that the club’s management understood the importance of Aziz Ki to the team. However, he suggested that the midfielder may have had reservations about playing under his tactical system.

“The reality is the management knew that as soon as Aziz was going to be important for the club. What I can tell you, what I think is the case- is that it is possible Aziz might have spoken to some members of management to indicate that he would not like to play in my system,” he added.

Mngqithi’s remarks suggest that, in his view, the situation may have involved discussions between the player and the club’s management about the team’s playing style. However, he presented this as a possibility rather than confirming that such a conversation had taken place.

The comments have added another dimension to discussions surrounding his exit from Young Africans, one of Tanzania’s prominent football clubs. His departure has also raised questions about the circumstances behind the decision and the relationship between the coaching staff, players and management.

Mngqithi arrived at Young Africans with considerable experience from South African football, having previously worked with Mamelodi Sundowns. His coaching approach and tactical philosophy were expected to play a role in shaping the team’s performances.

However, managing a club with established players and high expectations can present different challenges, particularly when a coach’s preferred system does not align with every player’s preferences.

Aziz Ki’s reported involvement in the situation has therefore become a subject of discussion, although Mngqithi’s comments do not establish that the midfielder was responsible for his departure.

The former coach’s explanation leaves questions about the circumstances surrounding his exit unanswered, while highlighting the possible influence of tactical disagreements and internal discussions at the club.
