Black Friday sales are already underway, despite the official Black Friday still being several weeks away.

But South Africans are being urged to think carefully before spending money on things they don’t really need.

Speaking to Africa Melane on CapeTalk/702, JustMoney’s Head of Customer Experience, Sarah Nicholson, warned that buying something just because it’s on special can end up costing you more.

“If you’re spending R1,000 on something that you would not otherwise have bought, you’ve not saved R1,000. You’ve actually spent R1,000.”

BLACK FRIDAY: How to save 100% and avoid fake deals

Nicholson said Black Friday can be a good opportunity to save money on essentials, particularly if you’ve planned and put money aside.

But she warned against borrowing money, getting into debt or buying on credit just to take advantage of a sale.

“Keeping money available for necessities is definitely more valuable than buying something at a lower price if it’s going to put pressure on your budget later on.

Nicholson said the best way to avoid overspending is to make a shopping list and also to set a budget before looking at deals.

“Write down what you need, what you can afford, and what is the maximum you’re prepared to spend.”

She also reminded shoppers that December and January can be very expensive months, making it important to keep money aside for everyday needs.

“There is no shame in missing a deal. Another promotion is definitely going to be coming along at some point.”
