Ruto Announces Bayern Munich vs Ajax as Talanta Stadium Opening Match on January 5, 2027

President William Ruto has announced that German football giants Bayern Munich will face Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam in the opening match at Kenya’s new Talanta Stadium on January 5, 2027.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s sports infrastructure as the country prepares to host major international sporting events, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

According to the President, the highly anticipated fixture will officially open the 60,000-seater facility, which is located along Ngong Road in Nairobi. The stadium has been renamed the Raila Odinga International Stadium in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The match will give Kenyan football fans an opportunity to watch two of Europe’s most recognised clubs compete on home soil. Bayern Munich, one of Germany’s most successful teams, will meet Ajax, a Dutch club widely known for its European achievements and tradition of developing young football talent.

Ruto said the fixture would demonstrate Kenya’s ambition to establish itself as a major destination for international sporting competitions.

The new stadium features modern facilities, including a hybrid playing surface, video assistant refereeing technology, goal-line technology and hospitality suites. These features are intended to support the country’s efforts to meet the requirements for hosting major sporting events.

The opening match is also expected to attract international attention as preparations for AFCON 2027 continue across East Africa.

Kenya’s hosting of the tournament alongside its neighbours presents an opportunity to showcase its sporting facilities and welcome football supporters from across the continent and beyond.

The Bayern Munich versus Ajax encounter will therefore be an important occasion for Kenyan football fans, who will have the chance to witness an international club fixture without travelling to Europe.

With January 5, 2027, set as the opening date, attention will now turn to the preparations for the historic match and the official launch of the stadium.
