‘Prof Jane Naana is my favourite economist’ – Kwame Pianim makes surprise revelation
According to Kwame Pianim, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s focus on how economic policies affect ordinary Ghanaians makes her his favourite economist.
Kwame Pianim disclosed that during macroeconomics discussions, the Vice President raises questions about the impact of policies on single mothers, women entrepreneurs and young people who earn a living by selling.
He highlighted that the Vice President consistently brings discussions about the economy back to the daily struggles of vulnerable Ghanaians during their meetings.
Speaking at the launch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ (GNAT) “Thank You Teacher” National Raffle, Kwame Pianim stated, “One thing I like about her, she is my favourite economist. Why do I say that? Whenever we are talking macroeconomics at the Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy, she always says, how does it help the single mother in the village, the women entrepreneur?”.
“She makes you realise that macroeconomics, everything boils down to the state, the status, the well-being of the average Ghanaian,” he added.
Kwame Pianim further disclosed that Ghana could make significant progress if all political leaders showed similar concern for vulnerable Ghanaians.
“If the political elite of Ghana were to have 10% of her empathy for the poor, this country in 10 years’ time will be better than Singapore,” he added.
In related news, Otiko Djaba, a former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has called out Ghana’s Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, questioning her effectiveness as the highest woman in a leadership position.
According to Otiko Afisa Djaba, Prof Opoku-Agyemang has not done anything for women since she assumed the office as vice president.
Speaking on Adom FM, Otiko Afisa Djaba stated, “She is the highest woman to date in a position of leadership and decision-making. She attained this feat to be able to represent women in the country, and so, she must be able to effectively use her position to help girls and women”.
“She has to be very firm to make sure what has happened will never repeat itself. She has the right to speak to the press and issue statements, but the actions to ensure that the investigations are ongoing properly are what is needed, and she must be able to put her foot down,” Djaba added.
Otiko Afisa Djaba, speaking on the Obuasi SHTS incident, called on the Vice President to take a firmer stance to ensure the matter is properly investigated.
She added, “Nothing should be swept under the carpet. She should make sure the affected female students receive psychological support. The mental anguish of somebody touching you in a way that you know is unacceptable and a taboo must be dealt with”.
“Vice President, this is a serious call to action. Since she came to power, we haven’t seen what she has done for women. She must stand firm and make sure the female students get the needed help as well as ensure their education isn’t affected by what has happened,” she concluded.
