“Lazima Upeane Hongo” – Mosiria Exposes Contractors’ Claims on Sakaja-Era Building Approvals

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has exposed complaints from contractors who allege that they face demands for huge bribes when seeking building approvals in Nairobi during Governor Johnson Sakaja’s tenure.

In his message, Mosiria said contractors had complained about the challenges they encounter when seeking approval to construct buildings. According to the claims he relayed, developers may be expected to pay bribes running into millions of shillings, with the alleged amounts differing between Kenyan developers and Kenyans of Somali origin.

Mosiria shared the concerns as he warned Nairobi residents to take building safety seriously following the deadly Eastleigh building collapse.

He raised concerns that the alleged high costs of securing approvals could eat into construction budgets, potentially pushing some developers to cut costs by using substandard building materials.

The claims have brought renewed attention to the building approval process in Nairobi and the importance of transparency in construction regulation.

However, Mosiria was sharing complaints he said he had received from contractors. The allegations have not been independently verified and do not establish that Governor Sakaja personally demanded bribes or that every building approved during his tenure is unsafe.

Mosiria also urged residents to report buildings showing cracks or other signs of possible structural weakness before they collapse.

The issue raises questions about oversight of building approvals and the need for investigations into any alleged corruption that could compromise construction standards and put residents’ lives at risk.
