Britam Names Former EY Kenya Boss Celestine Munda as Board Chair in Major Leadership Move

Britam Holdings Plc has appointed experienced corporate leader Celestine Munda as the substantive Chairperson of its Board of Directors, marking a new chapter in the financial services group’s leadership.

The Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed company announced that Munda’s appointment took effect on October 27, 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Her appointment formalises her position after serving as interim board chairperson since March 30, 2026, following the death of former chairman Kuria Muchiru on March 19, 2026.

In its announcement, Britam said the decision was made in accordance with the company’s Articles of Association.

The board expressed confidence in Munda’s leadership as the group continues implementing its ASCEND 2026–2030 strategy, which aims to create sustainable, long-term value for shareholders, customers, employees and communities across its seven African markets.

Munda brings more than 30 years of professional and leadership experience spanning professional services and the energy sector.

She previously served as a senior partner at Ernst & Young (EY), where she held the position of Country Managing Partner for Kenya.

Her career also includes senior regional and continental leadership roles, including Consulting Services Managing Partner for East and Central Africa and Risk Advisory Services Leader for Africa.

Before joining Britam’s leadership, Munda worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Royal Dutch Shell, gaining extensive experience in corporate governance, financial management, risk management, compliance and strategic planning.

Her professional background is expected to provide valuable experience as Britam pursues its long-term business objectives.

Munda holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting (Honours) and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya.

She has also undertaken leadership training programmes at Harvard Business School and the Gordon Institute of Business Science at the University of Pretoria.

Beyond Britam, she serves on the boards of several organisations, including M-PESA Foundation, TradeMark Africa and Jaguar Petroleum Limited.

Focus Shifts to Britam’s Long-Term Strategy

Munda’s appointment comes as Britam continues working towards its strategic goals for the 2026–2030 period.

Her experience in governance, institutional reforms and risk management is expected to support board oversight as the company seeks sustainable growth and long-term value creation.

The appointment also brings continuity to the board’s leadership following the death of Muchiru earlier this year.

With regulatory approvals still required, Munda is set to lead the board as Britam advances its strategic priorities across its regional markets.

Her appointment places an experienced corporate executive at the helm of one of East Africa’s established financial services groups.
