Gachagua Dismisses Claims That Sifuna Has Been Picked as Opposition Candidate for 2027

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been chosen as the opposition’s presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, insisting that consultations among opposition leaders are still ongoing.

The controversy followed reports that Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) deputy leader Cleophas Malala announced on Sunday that the opposition had settled on Sifuna as its preferred candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

The declaration came ahead of a meeting between Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on Monday, October 26.

According to reports, Kalonzo was surprised by Malala’s announcement, which appeared to suggest that the meeting would focus on securing support for Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. Malala, who was reportedly expected to help persuade Kalonzo, did not attend the discussions.

Gachagua reportedly rejected the announcement and directed his team to disregard it, maintaining that the opposition had not agreed on a presidential flag bearer. He was said to be unhappy that the declaration appeared to pre-empt negotiations that had not been concluded.

Despite the disagreement, the meeting reportedly highlighted the need for opposition leaders to avoid prematurely claiming the presidential ticket before reaching a broader agreement.

The discussions also touched on possible political cooperation between the Kikuyu and Kamba communities, with leaders exploring ways to strengthen their partnership ahead of the 2027 polls.

Gachagua has been seeking to build alliances with Kalonzo and other opposition figures as they consider how to unite their support bases against Ruto.

However, the question of who should lead a possible opposition coalition remains unresolved. The competing interests of different political leaders and regions could complicate efforts to settle on a joint candidate.

As preparations for the next General Election gather momentum, opposition leaders face the challenge of balancing individual ambitions with the need for a united political strategy.
