FG’s N70,000 Transport Allowance: Key Things Public Servants Should Know
According to a report by The Punch on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Federal Government has approved a N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants for six months, starting in November 2026, to ease the burden of rising living costs.
The approval followed a conciliation meeting between the government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on October 27, 2026. Several other workers’ welfare issues were also addressed during the meeting.
Here are key details of the agreement and what workers should know.
1. Eligible beneficiaries could receive N70,000 monthly from November 2026 through April 2027, amounting to N420,000 over the entire period. The amount represents six separate monthly payments, not a single lump sum.
2. Although the agreement specifies the amount and commencement month, it does not state the exact payment date, method of disbursement or whether workers must apply.
3. The memorandum encourages state and local governments to participate in the intervention. However, it does not confirm that every state and local government has approved the payment.
4. The government also approved payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears from May 1, 2026. Disbursement is expected to begin in November in three equal monthly instalments.
5. The government agreed to clear 19 months of outstanding health workers’ allowances within three months, starting in December 2026. The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission is also expected to assess the cost of adjusting the Consolidated Health Salary Structure within three weeks.
6. The government and labour leaders agreed to establish a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee to begin discussions immediately.
Other matters include hazard allowances for agricultural officers and proposed tax relief for workers.
The government and the NLC are expected to meet again after one month to review implementation.
