Twenty-one states across Nigeria have commenced the implementation of the harmonised 2026 tax laws as the government intensifies efforts to simplify taxation, improve revenue administration and eliminate illegal collections.

The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) of the Federation announced the development, noting that the new tax framework is designed to streamline more than 100 different taxes, levies and dues into nine categories.

The reform is expected to reduce multiple taxation, make tax payments easier for individuals and businesses, and improve transparency in revenue collection across the country. Read full article

The Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Olusegun Adesokan, said the implementation of the new tax laws would help end illegal revenue collection practices, including the unauthorised sale of stickers and emblems and the use of roadblocks to collect cash from motorists and businesses.

According to the board, the reforms are intended to establish a more organised and transparent tax system while preventing unauthorised persons and agencies from imposing levies on Nigerians.

The JRB said the implementation of the harmonised tax laws was gaining momentum, with states taking steps to digitise revenue administration, strengthen the capacity of tax officials and upgrade operational standards.

The reforms also seek to simplify tax compliance for businesses operating in the informal sector, making it easier for small traders, artisans and other self-employed Nigerians to meet their tax obligations.

Digitalisation is expected to improve the tracking of revenue, reduce leakages and make tax collection more accountable.

The board disclosed that it was strengthening partnerships with relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, to ensure compliance with the new tax framework and tackle illegal tax practices.

It also urged Nigerians to participate in the National Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) project and embrace voluntary tax compliance.

The JRB said public cooperation would be important to achieving the objectives of the reforms, which are aimed at creating a simpler, more transparent and more efficient tax administration system across the federation.

With 21 states already reported to have begun implementation, attention will now focus on how effectively the new framework is enforced and whether it delivers the promised relief from multiple taxation and unauthorised levies.
