“If The House Was Rented, Would You Bury Him There?”- Do2dtun Questions Toluwanisings’ Burial

Nigerian media personality Do2dtun has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the burial of late singer Toluwanisings, describing the practice of burying the dead in residential areas as archaic and primitive.

In a series of posts on his social media page, Do2dtun questioned the decision to bury the singer in a residential property, arguing that waking up to a grave could cause emotional distress, anxiety and constant thoughts about the deceased.

He also questioned whether the family would have considered burying the singer in the house if the property had been rented rather than owned.

According to the media personality, Toluwanisings touched many lives through his music, and the ongoing dispute surrounding his death could undermine the legacy he left behind.

Do2dtun urged the singer’s family, friends and loved ones to focus on preserving his memory rather than allowing disagreements over his burial to overshadow his contributions.

“If a person you love dies, the peace they need is the peace you project to his family, friends and well-wishers in his absence. The energy you all are exerting can’t bring back the dead, so why don’t you channel it into respecting the dead and protecting his legacy. The person you’re fighting for will eventually become dust. All you have is the legacy and memory. Protect that, not ruin it,” he wrote.

He further argued that the singer’s wife and children should be given priority when decisions concerning his burial and property are being made.

According to Do2dtun, a life partner experiences the loss differently from other family members because of the bond and responsibilities shared during the relationship.

He stated that while the deceased’s relatives could express their opinions, they should also consider the wishes and feelings of the wife and children before making important decisions.

“The family need to be the bigger person here. I am sure he would have said, ‘Anything my wife says,’ if he were here, and even if that’s not the case, in the hierarchy of rights, she holds the right over anyone. Yes, the family can suggest, but the partner holds the right, even his kids, before any family member,” he added.

Do2dtun also criticised the role of cultural expectations in disputes over burial arrangements, arguing that traditions should not prevent people from considering the emotional and practical consequences of their decisions.

He maintained that burying someone in a residential area should not automatically be regarded as the best way to honour the deceased, unless it was something the person had specifically requested.

“Burying the dead in a residential area is an archaic and primitive method of burial. Waking up to a grave most times will increase anxiety, unending thoughts and yes, maybe closer to what you lost, but to what end? If the house was rented, will you bury him there? What is the value, spiritual or moral standpoint of burying someone in their house? As for me, none, except if it’s their wish,” he stated.

The media personality further explained that marriage changes family dynamics, insisting that parents and other relatives should recognise the place of a spouse when decisions concerning a married person’s life and belongings arise.

He argued that cultural practices sometimes encourage a sense of entitlement among relatives, causing them to overlook the views of the deceased’s immediate family.

Do2dtun called for wisdom and understanding in handling the controversy, stressing that the focus should remain on respecting the deceased and protecting the memories he left behind.

He concluded that burial decisions should take the wishes of the deceased into account and involve the people closest to them, rather than being driven solely by tradition or family disagreements.
