“Why Should You Deny Someone A Job Because Of A Fake Birkin?” — Efia Odo Questions Serwaa Amihere

According to a Post by Ghbase on Facebook account on Tuesday, Oct 27, 2026, Ghanaian actress and socialite Efia Odo has disagreed with media personality Serwaa Amihere over her recent advice to young women who cannot afford original designer handbags, questioning why their fashion choices should influence how others treat them.

Efia Odo argued that carrying a counterfeit luxury bag should not prevent anyone from securing employment, stressing that employers should consider applicants’ qualifications, abilities and experience instead of judging them by their appearance.

According to her, the message behind Serwaa Amihere’s advice may have been to encourage people to live within their financial means. However, she questioned why someone should be criticised for choosing an imitation handbag that fits their budget.

She explained that wearing a fake Birkin bag should not become a reason for an employer to reject a qualified candidate during recruitment. In her view, such an approach places unnecessary importance on expensive fashion items rather than a person’s competence.

Efia Odo further criticised what she described as a tendency among some Ghanaians to associate respect with wealth. She maintained that people should receive fair treatment regardless of their financial situation or the brands they wear.

The actress also questioned the practicality of expecting young workers to purchase expensive designer products when many jobs in Accra offer relatively low salaries. She suggested that someone who can comfortably afford an original Dior handbag may not face the same financial pressures as an average job seeker.

Rather than attacking young women who purchase imitation products, Efia Odo believes the discussion should encourage them to maintain a decent appearance within their means.

Meanwhile, Serwaa Amihere has attracted criticism online following the circulation of a video in which she advised women who cannot afford authentic designer handbags to avoid purchasing counterfeit versions.
