Wamalwa Speaks for the First Time After Months Revealing When They Will Unveil Presidential Candidat
Kenyans could get a Christmas gift from the united opposition, with the coalition now targeting December 25 as the day to name its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa disclosed the timeline while speaking to Citizen TV after a delegation of opposition leaders visited former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence on Monday, October 26.
He said consultations among coalition partners had advanced enough for the group to estimate when a final decision would be made.
Wamalwa explained that coalition building is a process of talks and negotiations that ends with the formation of one team. Only then, he said, do members settle on the lineup, such as who will be captain, goalkeeper, defender or striker.
He added that the parties had agreed on how and when to proceed, and that intensified discussions between now and December should deliver the announcement.
The date marks a shift in a debate that has dragged on for months. Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has been pushing for an early announcement, declaring in July that the coalition should immediately back Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, while other leaders argue that the uncertainty is breeding anxiety within the ranks.
Gachagua, the DCP leader, has urged caution, warning that naming the candidate too early would expose them to pressure and interference from President William Ruto’s administration.
He had earlier proposed March 2027 and pointed to 2002, when Mwai Kibaki was unveiled barely two months before the election and still won, insisting, “We still have time.”
Meanwhile, cracks are showing within the alliance. Jubilee leader Fred Matiang’i and PLP leader Martha Karua have been running their campaigns separately, and the leader of the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) joined them last week.
The December target suggests that mounting pressure from supporters and the risk of more defections may have pushed the coalition’s inner circle to rethink Gachagua’s preferred timeline.
