Churches in Mombasa’s Bangladesh informal settlement are in mourning after three of their pastors died in the Kanga road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on October 25.

The victims were named as Pastor Joseph Vura of the Campaign for Salvation and Healing Ministry Church, Apostle Fonex Paul of the River of Restoration Church and Pastor Isaac Juma of the Grace Healing Church.

They were travelling home from western Kenya, where they had attended the funeral of a fellow minister, the late Reverend Kanan.

The bus, which was carrying members of the Mombasa Pastors Fellowship, crashed at about 7:45 am at Kanga, near Mtito Andei.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle, which belongs to the Power of the Word International Church, collided with a cargo truck while attempting to overtake.

A total of 24 people lost their lives, with 20 dying at the scene and four succumbing to their injuries during treatment.

Survivors were rushed to Makindu Sub-County Hospital, Kibwezi Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for emergency care.

Church leaders have appealed to the government to provide specialised medical support for the critically injured, many of whom are still hospitalised.

Back in Mombasa, congregations in Changamwe and nearby areas held emergency vigils and prayers as news of the deaths spread.

The sudden loss of three spiritual leaders has left many residents of the settlement struggling to take in the scale of the tragedy.

The crash happened on the same highway where 17 pilgrims died only weeks earlier, adding to concerns over the safety of the route.
