Chiefs Fans Criticise Players for Celebrating Soweto Derby Draw
Kaizer Chiefs have faced criticism from sections of their fan base following the players’ celebrations after drawing against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby. Amakhosi superfan Masilo Machaka has questioned the reaction, arguing that supporters expect more from the team whenever they face their biggest rivals.
The incident has generated discussions among Chiefs fans, with some expressing disappointment that the players appeared happy with a result that did not deliver a victory. For these supporters, the Soweto Derby carries enormous significance beyond the points at stake, as it is also about pride, bragging rights and the rivalry between the two South African football giants.
Speaking during an interview with KickOff, Machaka revealed that he shared the concerns of supporters who felt the players should not have celebrated the draw in that manner.
“I am also in support of those asking why the players celebrated a draw like that. Because even we as fans never celebrate a draw,” Machaka said.
His remarks reflect the expectations surrounding Kaizer Chiefs, a club whose supporters traditionally demand competitive performances and positive results against Orlando Pirates. For many Amakhosi followers, defeating their rivals is particularly important because it offers an opportunity to claim bragging rights and enjoy the satisfaction of winning one of the country’s biggest football encounters.
The Soweto Derby regularly attracts significant attention, with both sets of supporters closely monitoring the players’ performances and reactions. Consequently, even celebrations following a draw can become a subject of debate when fans believe their team should have achieved more.
However, the players’ response could also be interpreted differently. Celebrations after a draw do not automatically suggest that a team is satisfied with failing to win. Such reactions may reflect relief following a challenging encounter, especially when the match has been intense and physically demanding.
