Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns advance to Carling Knockout quarter-finals

Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns booked their places in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals with victories in their last-16 matches on Tuesday night.

Chiefs thrashed TS Galaxy 3-0 at FNB Stadium, Pirates beat Milford FC by the same scoreline at Orlando Amstel Arena, while Sundowns edged Marumo Gallants 1-0 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Wandile Duba scored a second-half hat-trick as Chiefs cruised to a 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy.

After a goalless first half, Duba opened the scoring in the 48th minute to give Amakhosi the lead.

He struck again in the 62nd minute after teammate Vilakazi had his penalty saved, reacting quickly to convert the rebound.

Duba completed his hat-trick four minutes later to seal the victory and send Chiefs into the quarter-finals.

The win offers Chiefs a chance to recover from their recent exit from the CAF Confederation Cup and continue their pursuit of domestic silverware.

Defending champions Orlando Pirates also advanced with a commanding 3-0 win over Milford FC.

Thapelo Mokobodi opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Tshepang Moremi doubled Pirates’ lead in the 33rd minute.

Moremi completed his brace two minutes after the restart, scoring in the 47th minute to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory keeps the Buccaneers’ title defence on track as they seek to retain the domestic cup.

Sundowns secured their place in the last eight with a narrow 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants.

Siyanda Ndlovu scored the decisive goal in the 20th minute, giving Masandawana an early lead they maintained until the final whistle.

Unlike Chiefs and Pirates, who won by three-goal margins, Sundowns had to work harder to secure their passage to the next round.

The victory gives Sundowns an opportunity to respond after their recent CAF Champions League exit. They will also be looking to progress further in a competition in which Gallants eliminated them last season.

All three teams are scheduled to return to Betway Premiership action on Saturday.

Chiefs and Pirates will meet in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium, while Sundowns are scheduled to face Durban City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The derby offers both Soweto clubs an immediate opportunity to build on their cup victories, while Sundowns will aim to carry their winning form into their league fixture.
