Woman Rescued From Eastleigh Rubble After 30 Hours Reveals How She Stayed Alive.

A woman who spent more than 30 hours trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area has recounted the terrifying experience that nearly cost her life. Zainab Mohammed survived the disaster after becoming trapped in a narrow space between two refrigerators inside her shop.

According to reports, Zainab was inside her business premises when the multi-storey building collapsed on Friday, October 23, 2026. She initially mistook the unusual noises for a commotion involving people nearby, but quickly realised that the situation was far more dangerous when the structure began coming down.

In the chaos that followed, concrete, stones and other building materials buried the area, leaving her with no clear escape route. With darkness and uncertainty surrounding her, the shop owner had to endure hours beneath the debris while hoping that rescuers would eventually locate her.

The space between the two refrigerators proved crucial during the ordeal. Although Zainab was trapped and unable to free herself, the gap around the appliances provided a space in which she could remain alive as rescue operations continued above her.

During those frightening hours, she reportedly relied on prayer to maintain hope. Her survival became even more difficult as time passed without knowing when help would arrive or whether rescuers could reach her position.

Another survivor, Victor Onyango, who operated a tailoring business in the area, was also trapped following the collapse. The two reportedly communicated while buried beneath the debris, offering each other encouragement as they waited for rescue teams.

Victor also managed to access drinks stored in a refrigerator, including water and soda, which helped him cope with thirst. Their interaction demonstrated how cooperation and emotional support can become important when people find themselves in life-threatening situations.

Zainab’s husband, Sultan, was away from the shop when the building collapsed, having left to attend prayers at a nearby mosque. Returning to discover the destruction, he faced an anxious wait as rescue workers searched through the wreckage for survivors.

The uncertainty surrounding his wife’s whereabouts made the situation particularly distressing, as he could only hope that she had survived beneath the collapsed structure.

Zainab was eventually pulled out alive on Saturday evening, more than 30 hours after the incident. Her rescue offered a moment of relief amid an operation that had raised fears about the fate of people who might still have been trapped inside the building.

Building Safety Questions Emerge After Collapse

Beyond the dramatic rescue, the incident renewed concerns about construction oversight and the enforcement of building regulations in Nairobi. Questions were raised about the approvals associated with the property and whether the necessary procedures had been followed.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja also questioned aspects of the handling of suspects linked to alleged planning and construction violations. Reports indicated that while county officials had approved a change of use for the property, the architectural plans required for construction had not been approved.

The collapse has once again highlighted the risks posed by unsafe buildings, particularly in densely populated commercial neighbourhoods where businesses, workers and customers share limited spaces.

For Zainab, surviving more than a day beneath the rubble was an extraordinary ordeal. The refrigerators that stood inside her shop became an unexpected source of protection, while the encouragement exchanged with another trapped survivor helped sustain hope until rescuers finally reached her.

Her experience has also served as a reminder of the importance of construction safety, effective emergency response and accountability in preventing similar tragedies.
