Kalonzo and John Methu Reveal Key Issues Discussed at Wamunyoro Meeting

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Secretary General John Methu have drawn attention to ongoing opposition consultations following a high-level meeting at Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on Monday, October 26.

The meeting brought together Kalonzo, Gachagua and other political leaders as opposition parties explored ways to cooperate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement after the discussions, Gachagua said the consultations focused on Kenya’s political future and the formation of what he described as the Sixth Administration.

He also indicated that opposition leaders were willing to make sacrifices to agree on a single presidential candidate to lead their campaign against President William Ruto.

“We are all in agreement that we shall make whatever sacrifices necessary to settle on one presidential candidate to be the captain of our struggle. Consultations continue,” Gachagua stated.

Kalonzo attended the meeting alongside a delegation of Wiper leaders, including Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior and Kitui Governor Julius Malombe.

The engagement came amid growing discussions about whether opposition parties can agree on a common candidate and establish a united political platform before the next election.

Methu, who serves as DCP secretary general, had also briefed Gachagua on the party’s progress following the former deputy president’s return from a lengthy trip to the United States.

Methu said the party had continued attracting members and prospective candidates seeking elective positions across the country.

The meeting followed Gachagua’s October 20 engagement with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement. That earlier meeting raised expectations of cooperation between DCP and the group linked to Sifuna.

However, questions remain over who would lead a joint opposition presidential ticket. DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala has publicly expressed support for Sifuna’s presidential bid, while broader consultations involving Kalonzo and other opposition figures continue.

No final presidential candidate was announced after Monday’s meeting. The discussions instead highlighted the continuing effort to build consensus among opposition leaders.

Further consultations are expected as the political camps work towards determining their alliances, leadership arrangements and strategy for the 2027 elections.
