Gachagua, Kalonzo Pact in Jeopardy as High-Stakes 2027 Power Struggle Threatens Opposition Unity
A meeting between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sparked fresh debate about the future of Kenya’s opposition as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The two leaders met at Gachagua’s rural home in Mathira, Nyeri County, in an engagement viewed as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation among politicians opposed to President William Ruto’s administration.
However, questions have emerged over the role of other political figures, including former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, in any emerging opposition alliance.
The discussions come amid growing competition over who should lead the opposition and who will secure its presidential ticket in 2027. Differences over leadership, political strategy and potential coalition arrangements could complicate efforts to build a united front.
Some of Gachagua’s allies have criticised Nyoro over his perceived political associations, raising questions about whether he would be accommodated in future coalition arrangements.
Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has also expressed reservations about Gachagua’s political approach, highlighting differences that could affect cooperation among opposition leaders.
With the 2027 election approaching, the main challenge will be finding common ground on leadership, candidate selection and power-sharing. Without agreement on these issues, efforts to consolidate the opposition could face significant difficulties.
