Ruto Faces Tight 2027 Race as Sifuna Surges to Within One Point in New Poll

Kenya’s 2027 Presidential Race Tightens as Edwin Sifuna Closes Gap on William Ruto

Kenya’s 2027 presidential race could be more competitive than expected, with a new opinion poll placing President William Ruto only one percentage point ahead of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

According to a Research 8020 poll published by The Standard on October 25, 2026, Ruto received 26% support, while Sifuna followed closely with 25%. The findings suggest that the contest could become more competitive as the country prepares for the next General Election.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka came third with 11%, followed by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at 9%. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua received 7%, according to the survey.

The poll was conducted in September 2026 and involved 3,760 Kenyans from all 47 counties. Five per cent of respondents were undecided, while the report also listed a large share under other candidates.

Sifuna’s strong showing comes as he increases his political activities through the Linda Mwananchi movement. His growing popularity could influence discussions among opposition leaders as they consider how to challenge Ruto in 2027.

Ruto, meanwhile, is expected to rely on his government’s development record and nationwide political activities as he seeks another presidential term.

Young voters are also expected to play an important role in the election. Issues such as unemployment, the high cost of living, taxation and access to economic opportunities could influence their decisions.

A separate Politrack Africa survey published earlier in October placed Ruto at 45.1% and Sifuna at 19.6%. The difference between the surveys shows that polling results can vary depending on the methods used and the people interviewed.

The Research 8020 findings also reported that 65% of respondents identified the cost of living as a major concern, while 58% cited unemployment.

Although the latest figures point to a close contest between Ruto and Sifuna, opinion polls are only snapshots of public opinion. They do not determine the final election outcome.

With the 2027 General Election still ahead, political alliances, campaign promises and voters’ changing priorities could reshape the race in the coming months.
