Inside Kamiti Prison, Where Mama Ngina Kenyatta Cared for Over 50 Children of Inmates

Mama Ngina Kenyatta, the wife of Kenya’s founding President, Jomo Kenyatta, was assigned the responsibility of caring for children whose parents were prisoners working in gangs at Kamiti Prison.

According to Mukami, who recounted her experience, Ngina took care of more than 50 children at the prison. Among them was Mukami’s son, making her account a personal recollection of the role Mama Ngina played in looking after the young children.

“Ngina Kenyatta was assigned to take care of all the children of the prisoners working in the gangs. She had more than 50 children under her care. My son was one of them,” Mukami narrated.

Her responsibility involved feeding and cleaning the children while they lived in difficult prison conditions. These duties required her to attend to their basic needs despite the challenging environment at Kamiti Prison.

The children depended on the care provided to them as their parents worked in the prison gangs. Mama Ngina’s assigned role placed her in charge of a large group of children who needed food, cleanliness and daily attention.

Mukami’s account provides a glimpse into the responsibilities Mama Ngina undertook at Kamiti Prison, where she cared for more than 50 children of inmates under difficult conditions.
