Nairobi Women Back Waiguru for Deputy President Position

A section of women from Nairobi County has urged President William Ruto to consider Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru for the position of Deputy President, citing her leadership experience and development programmes targeting women, youth and families.

The women drawn from the Nairobi Grassroots Women Leaders said Waiguru’s record in county leadership demonstrated the role women could play in senior government positions, particularly in promoting economic empowerment, improving healthcare and expanding access to public services.

Speaking during a gathering to express their support for the governor, the group, led by chairlady Celestine Bogo, said Waiguru had championed initiatives aimed at creating economic opportunities for women and young people.

Bogo cited women’s empowerment programmes, the construction of markets and improvements in healthcare facilities among the initiatives she said had benefited residents of Kirinyaga County.

She also highlighted Huduma service centres, saying they had brought government services closer to citizens and made it easier for residents to obtain essential documents, including birth certificates.

On healthcare, Bogo called for affordable and accessible medical services, particularly for mothers and children, saying the needs of vulnerable households should remain a priority for leaders.

The women argued that greater representation of women in senior government positions would strengthen inclusion and ensure that issues affecting families and communities received adequate attention.

They appealed to Ruto to consider Waiguru for the deputy presidency, saying her experience in county administration and implementation of development programmes would be an asset at the national level.

Their appeal comes amid ongoing debate over women’s representation in Kenya’s top leadership and calls for greater inclusion in decision-making.

The group said economic empowerment, accessible healthcare and improved public services should remain key priorities in the country’s development agenda.
