Nairobi Man in Disbelief, Sheds Tears as Wife is Rescued from Collapsed Eastleigh Building

Rescuers pulled a woman alive from the rubble of a collapsed 18-storey building in Eastleigh on Saturday evening, ending more than 30 hours of darkness for her and bringing a flood of relief to her husband.

Zeynab Muhammad was inside her ground-floor shop in the Isli area when the building came down on the afternoon of Friday, October 23. Her husband, Sultan, had left her minutes earlier to attend Friday prayers at the mosque.

Zeynab later recalled that the collapse came without warning. She first thought the deafening noise was a fight outside, only realising the building was caving in when it was too late.

She ended up wedged in a narrow gap between two refrigerators, a cramped pocket of space that kept her alive. Rescuers pulled her out uninjured.

Sultan told journalists he rushed back across the road after hearing the news, only to find that the building had vanished into a pile of concrete.

He said he knew which side the shop was on, since an underground entrance led to it. With no sign of his wife and rescue efforts still ongoing, he went back to the mosque to pray.

When she was finally brought out, Sultan broke down in tears and struggled to speak, saying he had no words to express his gratitude.

Another survivor, Victor Onyango, was also recovered alive after spending more than a day buried under debris.

A resident at the scene described the rescues as a miracle, adding that the community was now praying for others still trapped to be brought out alive. Many families remain anguished as their loved ones are unaccounted for.
