Mamelodi Sundowns Eliminated by Wiliete SC on Away Goals in CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns have suffered a disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League after Wiliete SC eliminated the South African side on the away-goals rule, preventing them from reaching the group stage.

The result represents a major setback for Sundowns, who entered the competition with ambitions of progressing further and competing for continental honours. Their elimination at this stage will raise questions about the team’s performance over the two legs and their inability to secure the aggregate advantage needed to advance.

Wiliete SC, meanwhile, will take considerable encouragement from overcoming one of African football’s prominent clubs. Eliminating Sundowns marks a significant achievement for the Angolan side and highlights the challenges that even established teams can face in continental competitions.

The away-goals rule proved decisive in the tie, meaning the teams’ overall results were not enough to separate them without applying the competition’s tiebreaking criteria. Sundowns will now have to turn their attention to their remaining domestic commitments after their continental campaign ended earlier than expected.

For the South African club, the disappointment will be particularly difficult given its ambitions in African football. Sundowns have built a reputation as regular contenders in CAF competitions, making an early elimination a notable setback for the club and its supporters.

Wiliete SC, on the other hand, can celebrate a result that will boost confidence within the squad as the club continues its continental journey.

Whether Sundowns’ elimination will be remembered as one of the biggest shocks in recent CAF Champions League history remains open to debate. However, the outcome is undoubtedly a significant moment in this season’s competition, with Wiliete SC advancing at the expense of a team widely recognised for its continental experience.
