Kenya’s Richest Families and How They Built Their Fortunes

Kenya’s wealthiest families largely fall into two groups: those whose fortunes grew from political influence and those who built industrial and commercial empires through business.

The Kenyatta family remains one of the most prominent. Their interests stretch across banking (including a major stake in NCBA), dairy through Brookside, hospitality, media and extensive land holdings. Mama Ngina Kenyatta and other family members are regularly ranked among the country’s richest individuals.

The Chandaria family, led by industrialist Manu Chandaria, represents the classic business success story. Through the Comcraft Group, they have built a manufacturing powerhouse spanning steel, plastics and aluminium across multiple countries. Their wealth is estimated in the region of one billion dollars in some assessments.

Other notable names include the Shah family of Bidco Africa, known for edible oils and consumer goods; the Ndegwa family with significant banking interests; and industrialists such as Narendra Raval. Political families like the Moi clan also feature strongly due to diversified investments accumulated over decades.

Many of the Indian-origin families on these lists built their wealth through trade, manufacturing and long-term investment rather than politics. Meanwhile, several political dynasties converted influence into lasting commercial assets.

Exact net-worth figures vary widely because much of the wealth sits in private companies and land. What remains clear is that a small number of families continue to control substantial portions of Kenya’s key economic sectors, from banking and manufacturing to agriculture and real estate.
