James Orengo Expected To Leave Linda Mwananchi and Join This New Party That Was Once Linked To Raila

Siaya Governor James Orengo and former long-serving minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere have unveiled plans to revive the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) as a political vehicle to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a pre-launch event in Golini, Kwale County, Orengo said the party would work with the Linda Mwananchi movement and other opposition forces to strengthen efforts to unseat Ruto.

The announcement comes ahead of the Linda Mwananchi movement’s planned tour of Kwale next week. LDP was a major force in opposition politics ahead of the 2002 General Election, when Raila Odinga and other former KANU members opposed Daniel arap Moi’s decision to endorse Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor.

Orengo said the revived party would strengthen the opposition’s bargaining power and complicate efforts by the broad-based government to attract opposition leaders.

He also pledged to give the Coast region a greater share of leadership positions, addressing concerns over political marginalisation. Although the party’s national headquarters will be in Nairobi, he said the Coast would play a central role in its operations.

Mwakwere backed Orengo’s leadership, declaring that the Siaya governor would head the revived party. Orengo urged coastal residents to support LDP and secure electoral victories from county assemblies to governorships, increasing the region’s influence in national politics and negotiations over the next government.
