Breaking News: Former RAF CEO Collins Letsoalo Faces Sequestration Over R1 Million Debt
Former Road Accident Fund (RAF) chief executive officer Collins Letsoalo is facing possible sequestration proceedings over an alleged unpaid legal bill exceeding R1 million.
Motalane Attorneys has approached the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, seeking an order to provisionally sequestrate Letsoalo’s estate over an outstanding amount of R1,059,736.11, which the firm claims is owed for legal services and related expenses.
According to a founding affidavit filed on 16 October, attorney Emmanuel Mojalefa Motalane alleges that Letsoalo appointed his firm in May 2025 to provide legal services in an ongoing matter involving the RAF.
The agreement reportedly stipulated an hourly rate of R3,000, with Letsoalo also required to reimburse the firm for additional expenses incurred while handling the matter.
Motalane claims that his firm provided the requested legal services between May and December 2025, with payment due upon the presentation of invoices. By the end of December, the outstanding account had allegedly accumulated to R1,059,736.11.
The attorney alleges that several attempts to recover the money between January and October 2026 were unsuccessful, prompting the firm to pursue legal action against the former RAF boss.
A message allegedly sent by Letsoalo on 4 October has become a key part of the firm’s application.
In the message reproduced in the affidavit, Letsoalo reportedly apologised to the attorney and explained that he was experiencing financial difficulties and could not afford to settle the outstanding bill.
He allegedly stated that he had been forced to make arrangements to cover school fees and other expenses, adding that he would pay the money if he had the financial means to do so.
Motalane argues that the message amounts to an acknowledgement of the alleged debt and indicates that Letsoalo is struggling to meet his financial obligations.
In the affidavit, the attorney maintains that Letsoalo’s explanation demonstrates his inability to pay the amount owed.
Motalane further states that he gave the former RAF CEO an opportunity to arrange payment before deciding to approach the court for sequestration proceedings.
On 6 October, the law firm reportedly issued a formal letter of demand, giving Letsoalo five days to settle the outstanding amount.
The application seeks to have Letsoalo’s estate provisionally sequestrated over the alleged unpaid legal fees.
The matter places the former RAF chief executive under further financial and legal scrutiny as the court is asked to consider the law firm’s application.
However, the allegations contained in the affidavit remain claims by the applicant, and the court will determine the outcome of the proceedings.
