A 31-year-old man was killed and a 43-year-old woman wounded at around 7pm, with detectives opening murder and attempted murder cases as the suspects remain on the run.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg reported: “The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Sunday evening, 25 October 2026, at about 7pm, in Teak Road, Bonteheuwel, where a 31-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded and a 43-year-old female wounded are under investigation.

“Bishop Lavis police were called to the crime scene, where they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies.

“The 31 year old male was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the female victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined. The suspect/s fled scene and are yet to be arrested.

“Bishop Lavis detectives are investigating murder and attempted murder cases.”

One resident told the Daily Voice: “Things are bad in Bonteheuwel. They are shooting every day and people are just dying. Apparently, it is gangsters who are fighting and causing these shootings.

“We just have to go to work and stay in your house. We often hear the gunshots going off from our house. but it seems like police and Law Enforcement is losing their grip on these gangsters.”

Ward Councillor for the area, Angus McKenzie, insists the shootings are politically motivated.

McKenzie said: “When I refer to possible politically-motivated violence, I am referring to the concerning timing, scale and spread of incidents across Bonteheuwel and other Cape Flats communities, just 10 days before an election.

“The sudden escalation across multiple areas, including communities beyond traditional gang hotspots, raises legitimate questions about the broader factors contributing to this violence. The timing and extent of what we are witnessing cannot simply be ignored or dismissed as business as usual.

“On Sunday, two people were shot in Bonteheuwel, one fatally and another seriously injured. I was in close proximity when the incident occurred and, with the assistance of tip-off information received, was able to deploy officers swiftly. Their rapid response resulted in an arrest and the confiscation of a firearm.

“I am not making allegations against any individual or political party. However, the timing and scale of the violence are deeply concerning.

“Our communities deserve to live without fear. Whatever the underlying causes, our priority must remain protecting residents, restoring stability and ensuring that violence does not overshadow the democratic process.”
