PS Elijah Mwangi Praises Kenya’s Capacity To Host Global Sports Events

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi and Kisumu County CECM for Sports, Culture, Gender and Youth Affairs Beatrice Wadiaga Odongo briefed the press during the launch of the 2026 African Road Cycling Championships in Kisumu.

The prestigious championships have kicked off in Kisumu City, attracting cyclists from across the continent.

Speaking during the launch, PS Elijah Mwangi said the growing participation in this year’s championships reflects increased confidence in Kenya’s ability to host international sporting events.

“This is the third edition. We had the same last year in Kwale, and previously we had it in the Rift Valley, and I have seen improvement over time,” he said.

Mwangi praised Kisumu County for its preparedness and support in hosting the continental event, saying it shows devolution is working in sports development.

On her part, Kisumu CECM Beatrice Wadiaga Odongo said the county is proud to host the championships and has put in place all necessary measures to ensure a successful event.

She noted that hosting the event will boost tourism and the local economy in Kisumu and the larger Nyanza region.

The championships run until October 25 and will feature different categories of road cycling races.

Cycling fans have been urged to turn up in large numbers to support the athletes and cheer Team Kenya.
