Pitso Mosimane Names Former Kaizer Chiefs Defender Bafana Bafana Squad
Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has reportedly included former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy in his preliminary squad for South Africa’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya.
The 22-year-old centre-back has attracted attention following his move to Azerbaijani club Sabah FK after leaving Kaizer Chiefs in June 2026. His inclusion in the preliminary squad could provide another opportunity to establish himself in the national team.
McCarthy’s reported inclusion comes after a period of development in European football. His experience with Sabah FK, including appearances in UEFA Champions League matches as stated in the report, has given him opportunities to test himself against international opposition.
The former Kaizer Chiefs defender is now looking to build on that experience and strengthen his case for a regular place in the Bafana Bafana setup.
McCarthy previously earned one senior international cap for South Africa. His inclusion in the preliminary squad offers him another opportunity to impress the coaching staff before the final selection is announced.
With 38 players reportedly under consideration, competition for places is expected to be strong. McCarthy will need to demonstrate his ability and consistency if he is to secure a spot in the final squad for the matches against Kenya.
His progress will be of interest to South African football supporters, particularly those who followed his development at Kaizer Chiefs.
Although his time at Naturena has come to an end, the young defender is continuing his career abroad and pursuing further opportunities to represent his country.
Note: The squad announcement and match details should be verified against official SAFA or Bafana Bafana communications before publication.
