Kaizer Motaung Jr Breaks Silence on Chiefs’ Exit and Reaffirms Support for Da Cruz

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has addressed the club’s disappointing CAF Confederation Cup elimination, reaffirming management’s support for head coach Fernando da Cruz and his technical team despite growing frustration among supporters.

In a statement released on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Motaung Jr acknowledged the disappointment caused by the team’s failure to advance beyond the second preliminary round of the continental competition. However, he stressed that the setback would not force the club to abandon its long-term football strategy.

“Following our unfortunate CAF Confederation Cup result, we understand and share the disappointment felt by our supporters, players, staff, and all stakeholders connected to Kaizer Chiefs,” he stated.

Amakhosi’s continental campaign came to an end against Zambian outfit Red Arrows. Chiefs won the second leg 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, levelling the aggregate score at 1-1, but subsequently lost 3-2 in the penalty shootout.

The elimination has intensified scrutiny of Da Cruz and his technical team, particularly after Chiefs also suffered disappointment in the MTN8 competition. Nevertheless, Motaung Jr made it clear that the club’s leadership remains confident in the current coaching setup.

“As a Club, we would like to reaffirm our full support for, and confidence in, the Head Coach and the entire technical team,” he said.

The sporting director explained that the club believes its current work and football philosophy can deliver sustainable success over time. He emphasised the importance of patience, consistency and resilience as Chiefs continue building towards their objectives.

Motaung Jr also praised the players’ commitment against Red Arrows, acknowledging that injuries had affected the squad while highlighting the determination shown during the encounter.

He added that the club would continue evaluating performances, identifying weaknesses and making decisions based on careful assessment rather than reacting hastily to disappointing results.

Chiefs remain committed to achieving their domestic and continental ambitions, despite the early end to their Confederation Cup campaign.

Addressing the club’s supporters, Motaung Jr expressed appreciation for their continued loyalty and called for unity during this difficult period.

“Now is the time for unity, not division,” he said, expressing confidence that the foundations being laid would eventually help the club achieve the success its supporters expect.

For now, Motaung Jr’s message is clear: Kaizer Chiefs intend to continue with their long-term project under Da Cruz rather than make immediate changes in response to their continental disappointment.
