Phumlamqashi Mother Nonhlanhla Digoro Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison for Killing Her Two Sons
A mother from Phumlamqashi, an informal settlement south of Johannesburg, has been sentenced to an effective 40 years in prison after admitting to the murder of her two young children. Nonhlanhla Digoro appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court, where she entered guilty pleas to two counts of murder following the deaths of her sons, ten-year-old Setshaba and eight-year-old Botlhale.
The tragedy unfolded in May 2024 at the family’s residence in Phumlamqashi, where both boys lost their lives.Evidence presented in court confirmed that the young children died from poisoning administered in their home. The incident deeply unsettled the local community, raising painful questions about the safety of vulnerable children within their own households.
During the court proceedings, Digoro took full responsibility for the poisonings by pleading guilty to both murder charges. The presiding magistrate sentenced her to 20 years in prison for each child’s death. In delivering the sentence, the magistrate ordered that the two 20-year terms be served consecutively rather than concurrently. This decision ensures that Digoro will serve the punishment for each young life taken one after the other, resulting in a total sentence of 40 years behind bars.
The legal outcome brings a long court process to a close, delivering accountability for a crime that shocked the surrounding region. Child protection advocates and government representatives who monitored the proceedings emphasized that parents hold a primary duty to care for and safeguard their children. The severity of the consecutive sentencing reflects the court’s stance on severe domestic crimes and offenses committed against defenseless minors.
While the sentencing provides legal resolution to the criminal case, the painful reality of the loss remains for the extended family and neighbors in Phumlamqashi. Digoro will serve her four-decade term in a correctional facility, leaving a community still mourning the tragic loss of two young lives.
